Bret –
Seeds of Decay is one of the best adventures I’ve ever read, and it’s an easy one to take in because the story is like immersing yourself in a fantasy book – I didn’t feel like I was studying an adventure, it was more like enjoying a novel.
The story builds from the characters having a simple visit to a pumpkin festival to a cinematic tale of epic proportions – and it all feels like a natural progression as the characters go from nobodies to heroes. The NPCs have a wide range of personalities. Some are quaint and down to earth, some are vicious, some are comical, and everything in between. Most of the NPCs have a well-defined description of why they behave the way they do, which was a nice touch.
As far as the product quality goes – it’s top notch. The artwork is wonderful, and consistent in style. There are the standard messages boxed in the text to help explain story points along with boxed in text to read or paraphrase to the players. Standard stuff, but it’s all well written and the dialogue flows better than most adventures I’ve read. There are also tiny comments along the side of some of the paragraphs to quickly reference important details, like the page number where you will find the monster that the players are encountering, or a specific quality about a room or area that you can reference at a glance.
It’s also an adventure that would be fun for both children and adults. It’s adorable and innocent enough for children, but colorful and rich enough for adults to enjoy also.
The creatures are all well defined and thought out. The monsters fit into the adventure in a way that helps to build the story and give the world more depth and definition. Two of the creatures even benefit one another in a symbiotic relationship that comes across as a natural progression and gives the world even more depth.
The author presents the background in such a way that you get everything you need without getting more than you wanted. I am sometimes overwhelmed with pages and pages of background that are okay to know, but really don’t apply to the adventure at hand. This adventure doesn’t suffer from that problem. Its succinct and to the point, along with being an interesting read.
The dobbers and woodkin give this world a special flavor, and the rules for each race are well designed and thought out.
All this is my take after reading through the adventure. My gaming group is currently in the middle of a campaign, but Seeds of Decay will be next on this list and I’m very much looking forward to it…
