UnMarketing

I recently completed the audio version of UnMarketing, a new book by Scott Stratten.  Check it out: http://bit.ly/gotm66

This book was nothing short of awesome! I've been saying for years that Splattered Ink does things differently. We put people and relationships first and the first part of building a business is building people.  That being said, with all the marketing noise out there, we haven't always successfully implemented that concept.

We want Splattered Ink to be successful, and traditional marketing says we have to do certain things, like cold calling or direct mail, or event news paper ads.  While we've never ran a news paper ad, we done our share of cold calling, uh-hem, telespam. (thanks Scott for that)  It always felt wrong to me. I don't like getting cold calls, why should I assume my potential customers want to get cold calls? UnMarketing clearly spells out why that felt wrong and debunks loads of other marketing conventions.

Apparently, I am not the only one who has felt the old ways of marketing just are not right any more.  People don't want to get cold calls or direct mail. People make their purchasing decisions based on relationships. We all want to do business with other people, not with a mysterious voice or a postcard!

Now that what my gut has been trying to tell me has been clearly defined by Scott Strattens's book, it's time to start implementing the ideas he talks about.

I'm going to start simply enough, by increasing my presense on Twitter.  BTW, I'm @splatteredink. It's awesome, I've already made some new friends and look forward the more.  Also, if you've read (or listened to) UnMarketing, use the hash tag #unbook in your tweets to join in on the conversation.

First thing I want to do is brainstorm some specific ideas for relationship building on twitter. Mention @splatteredink and/or #unbook in your tweets and we'll talk!
