MURPHYSBORO - Even though it wasn't a scheduled activity for this year's 57th annual Murphysboro Apple Festival that began Wednesday, the opening of the Murphysboro General Store certainly fits the festival's theme this year - "Ripe With Possibilities."

The brainchild of Murphysboro schools Superintendent Chris Grode who had a vision of opening a school store managed and run by students as training for the real world, the retail business offers all kinds of school merchandise for sale.

High school students taking business classes manage and operate the school. Merchandise includes student-made items for sale such as stone pieces from art classes, baked products from home economic classes and wood work constructed in the school shop.

"This is a business that will help out all of our clubs," Grode said, noting the store offers a central location for fundraising activities of school booster clubs for example.

Grode was scheduled to join other civic and school officials in a ribbon cutting for the store at 10 N. 13th St. on Wednesday night.

The store opened its doors around 4:30 p.m. and was manned by high school students getting a hands-on experience in merchandising through their volunteer efforts.

"I can't do it now, but I would still like to open my own cosmetology thing in the future," said sales clerk Sharell Tyrone, a sophomore who is in Ryan Berry's marketing class.

Grode's vision came to fruition when he met small business owner Darryl Jones at a Murphysboro Economic Development Organization meeting.

Jones had recently purchased a storefront in the 1200 block of Walnut for his business, Splattered Ink. He was looking for tenants also.

Much of Jones' 9,000-square-front commercial, L-shaped property is for lease to small businesses like The Merchandise or professional service, such as accountants or insurance agents. There is also apartment space for rent.

Splattered Ink will host an open house after Saturday's Appletime Grand Parade, which begins at 11 a.m.

Today's Apple Festival activities include performances from the John A. Logan College Band at 6:30 p.m. at Smysor Plaza and the Robbins Barbershop Quartet at the Arts and Crafts area beginning at 7 p.m.

Extra Ink is a free marketing and graphic design newsletter. Our goal is to provide interesting and useful information to any business.

A Smashing Success!

The first annual Entrepreneur’s Forum was held last week, October 18th, 2007. It was a smashing success! Our room was nearly full of attendees, the panelists did and excellent job and the attendees all left with smiles on their faces. I won’t say it went off without a hitch, however. We had quite a few obstacles to overcome.

First, it seems like we weren’t the only people who thought the middle of October was a good time to hold a business event. My largest local competitor (who shall remain nameless) even decided to have a party the vary same day, The Southern Business Journal’s Business Expo was the next day, along with the Regional Chamber of Commerce’s luncheon, just to name a few items. Needless to say, we had a lot of events to compete for our attendee’s time. I know how precious everyone’s time is and I appreciate all of those who joined us! I look forward to getting to know all of you more!

We also had some challenges provided by the weather. A doosey of a storm early Thursday morning. Many people were without power and we feared the forecast of additional storms for that evening (during the event) would prevent people from coming. We also feared that the loss of power to many would prevent them from seeing some of the media attention our event had gathered. We were fortunate enough for our moderator, Cavanaugh Gray to be interviewed live on the morning news. Cav did a great job! Thanks buddy!

The last obstacle I’m going to mention here was caused by some very good news. One of our panelist, Jason Borque, was detained by the birth of his second child, a beautiful baby girl. He even managed to make a cameo. Congratulations Jason!

Follow up to Interview

I sent a reply to Lauren Hoover about her interview with me. I thought it would interesting for her to share more about the project. Her reply is below. Enjoy.

Darryl,

Thank you for answering my questions. I know my classmates will benefit from your experiences,

The assignment was to interview a professional illustrator about their philosophy and methods in regards to their work. I was also to ask any questions that I felt important. I wanted not only to fulfill the assignment’s requirements but, also to find out about the business side of the Illustration field. I was also to identify similarities between your work and mine if there were any.

I used the interview as is and I added a little about who you are, your company, and your mission statement. I got all that from your about page which is why I didn’t ask you about it (no point for you to write it twice). So, I wrote an intro and conclusion with the interview.

About me… I am a 26 year old stay at home mom in Saxton, Pa (it is a small, tragic town). I’m half way through my second year at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh’s Online division (which means I take all my classes online) working toward a Bachelors degree in Graphic Design. Since my high school graduation in 1999, I have wanted to pursue a college degree in art. I spent many years waiting for the perfect oportunity. A year and a half ago I was sitting in church listening to my pastor’s sermon about praying and acting. I realized that I could pray all I wanted for the perfect opportunity to go to school but, unless I was willing to take the first step towards that opportunity, the prayer would never be answered. The next day I got on the computer, contacted AIO and started the admissions process. Every aspect of my school life (and financial life!!) has been in the hands of God and He has blessed it all. My first quarter I was on the honor roll. The second quarter I was on the Dean’s list. Now I am on the President’s list. Even better than that, I passed College Math with an A! Math is my absolute worst subject.

I’m not sure where I want to go when I graduate. I’m thinking of continuing on to my Masters degree because I would really like to teach. Right now I teach a children’s youth group at my church which is fun and gives me an excellent perspective on how to reach children, Above all, I want to use my talent to honor and glorify God.

I found the Splattered Ink site through a search on Google (or Yahoo!) for Christian Illustrators. Your site was one of the only legitimate sites- the rest seemed to be link collections.

I actually have to update my portfolio (I’ve been putting off wading through all my files) so, I will send you some examples soon.

Have a nice day and thanks again,

Lauren
